Samantha slipped an apron around her waist, tucked an order pad and pencil in one of the pockets, and picked up an empty tray. She glanced at Kieran, already out of his jacket and rolling up his shirtsleeves. He was chatting in Irish with the group of men who had followed them to the pub, a happy smile on his face. As if knowing she was watching him, he looked up, turned his head, and winked.

Laughing, she waved, then headed toward a table of tourists in need of food and drink. “The special today is lamb stew for twelve euros. A pint of Guinness is four euros.” Samantha smiled at their dumbfounded expressions. “So, what can I get ya’all today?”

“What part of Ireland are you from, eh?” the fortyish gentleman on her left asked.

“The Texas part.”

She bantered with them good naturedly as she took and delivered their orders. They were a group of six fantasy writers on holiday from Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Considering her one trip to Montreal had been a hair short of disaster, she decided not to mention that she’d ever been in their country.

The next three hours flew by. Literally. Samantha never sat down once, never stopped for even a sip of water, and was starving when the clock behind the bar chimed eight times. The five gentlemen who had followed them into the bar now sat at their own table in the far corner, two of them warming up instruments to be played as soon as Tim turned off the radio in favor of local live music.

“Miss Samantha, you must let me show you how to play the uilleann.” He held up the small bagpipe. “You play it with your elbow. Leaves the mouth free for drinking and smoking.”

Samantha laughed. “I’d like that, Paddy. Next break I get. Okay?”

He nodded. “I’ll be waiting.”

Kieran was wiping down the bar as she approached. He shook his head, a broad grin on his handsome face. “You’ll have your pick of husbands by night’s end. Four of those men are widowers.”

“They’re just lonely old men being nice.” And besides, the only man she’d pick stood in front of her. And that wasn’t going to happen. By night’s end or any other time. “I could use something to eat.”

As if on cue, Tim stepped through the swinging door with two plates of stew and set them on the bar top. “Sit down, the both of you. You’ve done enough for tonight. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your help. Go raibh maith agat.”

Samantha perched on a stool, watching Tim build two glasses of Guinness. Though the earlier rush had waned with most of the tourists moving on to other venues, others had come in to take their places. More of the locals would drift in and out until the bar closed at midnight. She sighed. Tim set a pint in front of her. She’d never tasted the dark stout that was Ireland’s stock in trade. She sipped tentatively, then with greater gusto as her thirst took over.
